A Guide to Eco Friendly Corporate Gifting

Sustainable gifting is easy to claim and harder to do, because the parts that undermine it are usually the parts nobody looks at - the packaging, the printing method, and whether the gift is something anyone actually wants.

Usefulness is the first sustainability question

The least sustainable gift is the one that gets thrown away, regardless of what it is made of. A recycled item nobody wants has a worse footprint than a conventional item used daily for two years.

That makes usefulness the first filter rather than an afterthought - and it is a large part of why stationery holds up well in this category.

Materials that actually change things

  • Recycled paper and board in place of virgin stock
  • Wood in place of plastic components
  • Responsibly sourced rather than unspecified materials
  • Packaging without plastic film, inserts or laminate

Branding methods matter as much as materials

A recycled notebook with a plastic-laminated printed logo has undone part of its own point. Laser engraving burns the mark into wood with no added material; debossing presses it into board; soy-ink printing keeps the finish consistent with the substrate.

Choosing the branding method is where a sustainability claim is either substantiated or quietly abandoned.

Avoiding greenwashing

Say what is true and no more. Claiming a gift is 'eco friendly' without being able to say why is the thing recipients notice, particularly in ESG-literate organisations where somebody will ask.

If the gifting will be referenced in sustainability reporting, ask your supplier for material details up front rather than after the fact.

Making eco gifting affordable at volume

The usual objection to sustainable gifting is cost at scale. In practice the gap narrows considerably at the volume end - a recycled-cover notebook set with one-colour printing sits close enough to a conventional equivalent that switching the default giveaway rarely requires a budget conversation.

Frequently asked questions

What actually makes a corporate gift eco friendly?
Recycled or responsibly sourced materials, wood in place of plastic, packaging without plastic film - and branding applied by engraving, debossing or soy ink rather than laminated printing. Also, crucially, a gift people will actually use.
How do we avoid greenwashing our gifting?
Only claim what you can substantiate. If you cannot say why a gift is eco friendly, do not call it that - in ESG-literate organisations somebody will ask. Request material details from your supplier before you make the claim.
Is sustainable gifting affordable at large volumes?
The gap is narrower than most people expect at the volume end. A recycled-cover notebook set with one-colour printing sits close enough to a conventional equivalent that switching a default giveaway rarely needs a budget conversation.
