The Corporate Gifting Guide

Most corporate gifting problems are not really about the gift. They are about deciding late, choosing for the wrong audience, or personalising nothing - and no amount of budget fixes any of those.

Start with the occasion, not the catalogue

The single most common mistake is browsing products before deciding what the gift is for. Occasion determines almost everything downstream: an onboarding kit needs to be re-orderable, a client gift needs to be timely, an executive gift needs to be restrained, and an event kit needs to arrive before a fixed date.

Once the occasion is settled, the shortlist usually narrows to two or three sets on its own.

Match the gift to the recipient's seniority

A gift that suits a whole team rarely suits a managing partner, and the reverse is worse - an expensive gift distributed widely burns budget without landing anywhere in particular.

As a rule: volume audiences want usefulness, senior audiences want material quality and restraint, and mixed audiences are usually better served by running two tiers than by compromising on one.

Personalise something

Personalization is the highest-leverage decision in corporate gifting, and the cheapest. A logo makes a gift official; a name makes it addressed. Where budget is tight, adding names to a modest set beats upgrading to a better set with no name on it.

Plan the year rather than the order

Companies that gift well work from a calendar. Onboarding runs continuously, appreciation clusters around review cycles, the festive quarter is fixed and crowded, and events have hard deadlines. Mapping those once a year turns four rushed orders into one planned programme, and usually costs less.

  • Continuous: onboarding kits, held as standing stock
  • Cyclical: appreciation and milestone gifting around review periods
  • Seasonal: festive and new-year gifting, planned a quarter ahead
  • Fixed-date: conferences and events, ordered earliest of all

Common mistakes worth avoiding

  • Ordering before confirming the final recipient count
  • Leaving artwork approval until after production is booked
  • Sending the same gift to clients and staff without checking it suits both
  • Gifting planners mid-year, when they will not be used
  • Treating the festive season as a deadline rather than a plan

Frequently asked questions

How do we choose a corporate gift?
Decide the occasion first, then the audience's seniority, then personalization - and only then look at products. Working in that order usually narrows the shortlist to two or three sets without any browsing.
Is it better to spend more on a gift or to personalise it?
Personalise it. Adding a recipient's name to a modest set almost always lands better than upgrading to a more expensive set with nothing personal on it.
Should employees and clients receive the same gift?
Only if the set genuinely suits both, which neutral premium sets often do. Where the two audiences differ sharply in seniority, running two tiers is more effective than compromising on one gift.
